How to Choose Sunglasses

What should you pay attention to when choosing sunglasses? How to understand which ones are of high quality and understand the protection factors?

Imagine the sun gently warming your skin with its rays…. Did you miss this feeling? We are sure you did ? To go outside, all that remains is to protect your eyes from ultraviolet radiation and choose fashionable sunglasses.

WHY DO YOU NEED SUNGLASSES?

The primary function of sunglasses is to protect the eyes from ultraviolet radiation. Scientifically, this concept means electromagnetic radiation invisible to the eyes, which is in the spectrum between visible and X-ray (invisible) radiation. On our planet, its primary source is the sun, in the rays of which there are three types of ultraviolet: UVC, UVB, and UVA. The last two have the most significant impact on the eyes.

UVB rays are practically imperceptible, the epithelium of the cornea mainly absorbs them, but if the irradiation is intense, it can cause a burn.

UVA rays penetrate the eye through the cornea and are filtered out by the crystalline lens, thereby harming it. And with intense exposure, they can penetrate to the very retina of the eye, which is not capable of regeneration, and cause irreversible damage.

Therefore, to the answer, why do we need sunglasses, we answer – for protection.

WHO SHOULD WEAR SUNGLASSES?

Here, only one correct answer is possible – everyone, no exceptions because it is easier to prevent harmful effects on the eyes than to cure them.

Particularly attentive to the selection of sunglasses should be those people who are at risk and most exposed to ultraviolet rays. For example, those taking certain types of antipsychotics, anti-inflammatory and diuretic drugs – their components directly affect the photosensitivity of your eyes, increasing it quite significantly. This also applies to those with light eyes, as they are more susceptible to radiation.

WHY ARE LOW-QUALITY SUNGLASSES DANGEROUS?

It is essential to understand that the primary function of sunglasses is high-quality UV protection. After all, if it is not there, the glasses will transmit UV-rays into the eye. And this is much worse than going without sunglasses at all. Physiologically, in bright light, the pupil narrows, the eye squints, thereby preventing the passage of ultraviolet radiation. And in dark glasses, the pupil is wide, and you do not squint; meanwhile, harmful rays freely penetrate the eye and systematically damage it.

Also, poor processing of materials is possible in low-quality glasses, and a poorly processed edge of the same lens can begin to crumble. It means that there is a risk that microscopic crumbs and particles of materials will get into the eye, and this is undoubtedly very dangerous.

Frames made of questionable materials can cause permanent skin irritation or allergic reactions.

Therefore, everyone should treat the selecting glasses so that you do not have a shadow of doubts about their quality.
